Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation Launches Campaign to Transform Nigeria’s Primary Healthcare Centres
The Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, a leading non-profit organisation committed to improving public service delivery in Africa, has announced a nationwide campaign to revitalise Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria.
As part of its Adopt-A-Healthcare-Facility Programme (ADHFP), the Foundation is calling on Nigerians to nominate PHCs in urgent need of intervention. The nomination campaign, which began on November 4 and runs until December 31, 2024, aims to address the critical gaps in Nigeria’s primary healthcare system.
This initiative, facilitated by the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN), follows the Foundation’s successful revitalisation of four PHCs in Edo State, with 14 more centres in the pipeline. Now, the focus has shifted nationwide, encouraging communities to spotlight under-resourced facilities in their local government areas.
With over 30,000 PHCs nationwide, an estimated 80% are under-resourced, leaving millions—especially women and children—vulnerable to inadequate healthcare. Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate remains among the highest globally, with one in 22 women facing a lifetime risk of death from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications.
Dr. Nonye Egekwu, Director of Health Philanthropy at the Foundation, emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating:
“Revitalising our Primary Healthcare Centres is essential for addressing Nigeria’s healthcare challenges at the community level. Through the ADHFP, we are dedicated to transforming these centres into world-class facilities capable of providing essential care and support to Nigerian families.”
The ADHFP showcases the potential of public-private partnerships in tackling systemic healthcare challenges. It enables individuals and organisations to adopt PHCs, driving improvements in infrastructure, equipment, and staffing. These efforts align with Nigeria’s national healthcare goals and support the government’s agenda to strengthen primary healthcare systems.
The Foundation is urging communities, health stakeholders, and the public to take an active role by nominating PHCs that require urgent attention. Nominations can be submitted via the Foundation’s website: aigimoukhuedefoundation.org/adhfp.
Founded by Aigboje and Ofovwe Aig-Imoukhuede, the Foundation focuses on transforming public service delivery and expanding access to quality primary healthcare in Africa. Through financing, consulting support, and capacity-building programmes, it supports reform initiatives across the public sector.
